Page extraction guide
Turn page ranges into separate PDF files
Split PDF copies the ranges you specify into independent PDFs and packages them in a ZIP. It is designed for extracting chapters, forms or attachments as separate files. It does not alter the original and it does not automatically create one PDF per page unless you enter each page as its own range.
How to split a PDF
1. Choose the source
Add one valid, unencrypted PDF. Check its total page count in your normal viewer if you are unsure of the ranges.
2. Enter ranges
Use `1-3, 4-6, 7` to create three PDFs. Leave the field empty only when you want one full-range copy.
3. Open the ZIP
Download the ZIP, extract it and confirm each named range begins and ends on the intended pages.
Useful for
Separate invoice batches, extract a chapter, isolate completed form pages or prepare smaller sections for email and later merging. Use Redact PDF first when an extracted section still contains information that must not leave your device unredacted.
Local processing
PDF parsing, page copying and ZIP creation run on your device. The document and generated files are not uploaded to FiloTool.
Formats and practical limits
Input is one PDF; output is a ZIP containing PDFs. There is no fixed byte or page cap in this implementation, but large ranges and many outputs consume browser memory.
Limitations
The tool copies page content but does not promise preservation of document-level bookmarks, attachments, forms, scripts or signatures in each new file. Password-protected PDFs are not accepted.
Choose the right page tool
Split PDF creates separate files by range. Delete PDF Pages creates one copy without unwanted pages. Organize PDF is better when individual pages need reordering, rotation or duplication.
Troubleshooting page ranges
A range is rejected: remove spaces inside numbers, use ascending ranges and stay within the document page count.
ZIP seems empty: finish the browser download, then extract the ZIP with the operating system or a trusted archive utility.
Output is larger than expected: splitting copies selected PDF objects but does not recompress page content. Compress the finished section only after checking it.
Protected source: use Unlock PDF only when you are authorized, then split the verified unlocked copy.
Plan page-level changes first
Read the PDF assembly and page organization guide when the task involves a mix of extracting, deleting, rotating and reordering.
Split PDF questions
What does an empty page-range field do?
It creates one output PDF containing the full document range. Enter separate comma-delimited ranges when you want multiple files.
How are split files named?
Each PDF uses the source filename plus its selected start and end page, and all generated PDFs are packaged in one ZIP download.
Can ranges overlap?
Yes. Each range is processed independently, so a page can appear in more than one output when ranges overlap.
Does splitting remove pages from the original?
No. The source file is not modified. The tool creates new PDFs from the selected page ranges.
Are the PDF and ZIP uploaded?
No. The source is read, pages are copied and the ZIP is assembled locally in the browser.
Why is a page range invalid?
Ranges must use positive existing page numbers in ascending form, such as 1-3, 5, 8-10. Reversed ranges, zero and pages beyond the document are rejected.
