Cropping removes outer pixels

The movable selection identifies the source pixels that remain; pixels outside it are omitted. Free mode can select any rectangle. Fixed 1:1, 4:5, 16:9 and 9:16 modes lock the selection ratio without stretching pixels. Cropping can change aspect ratio, but it does not add image detail.

How to crop

  1. Add a JPG, PNG or WebP image.
  2. Choose Free or a fixed ratio, then drag the box and handles.
  3. Crop, inspect the measured output facts and download.

Output and privacy

Files can be up to 20 MB and 24 megapixels. The selected source area determines output dimensions. JPG, PNG and WebP keep their format; PNG and WebP can preserve transparent pixels while JPG remains opaque. Your image is cropped locally in your browser and is not uploaded to FiloTool for cropping.

Limitations

This page handles one still image and does not provide rotation, perspective correction, subject detection, circular masks, or exact numeric crop fields. Re-encoding means file size may increase or decrease.

Troubleshooting

If no result appears, confirm the selection has visible width and height and the source is a genuine supported image. Rotate first when it is sideways. Resize after cropping when an exact final width and height are required.

Method: Deterministic RGBA PNG fixtures generated by e2e/fixtures/generate-fixtures.mjs and cropped with the production FiloTool cropper in Playwright Chromium. Fixed-ratio selections start centered at 80% preview width. Bytes are measured from actual source and download files.

Crop, resize, compress or convert?

Crop to remove outer pixels. Resize to change pixel dimensions, compress to reduce file size, or convert to change format. For several files, use the batch image optimizer.

Frequently asked questions

Does cropping resize the selected area?

No. The selected source pixels become the output dimensions. The preview is scaled for the screen, but the crop is calculated against the image's natural size.

Which aspect ratios are available?

Use a free crop or lock the selection to 1:1, 4:5, 16:9, or 9:16. You can still move and resize the locked crop box.

Does the output keep the original format?

Yes for supported JPG, PNG, and WebP inputs. PNG and WebP can retain transparent pixels; JPG remains opaque.

Why can a crop be larger than the original file?

Cropping removes pixels but re-encodes the image. Format, content and the source encoding can make the result larger or smaller.

Is the image uploaded?

No. Your image is cropped locally in your browser and is not uploaded to FiloTool for cropping.
