Frequently asked questions
Can I add page numbers to only selected PDF pages?
Yes. Number all, first, last, odd, or even pages; exclude the first or last page; or enter a custom page range.
Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?
Yes. Choose any whole starting number from 0 through 999999.
Can I skip numbering the cover page?
Yes. Choose Exclude first page. Sequential numbering starts on the next selected page.
Can I use Page X of Y?
Yes. Use Page X of Y, X of Y, or a custom template with the {page} and {total} placeholders.
Can I change the page-number position?
Yes. Choose one of nine positions and fine-tune horizontal and vertical margins and offsets.
Can I change the font and color?
Yes. Choose Helvetica, Times Roman, or Courier with regular, bold, italic, or bold italic styling, plus size, color, and opacity.
Will adding page numbers reduce PDF quality?
No rasterization is used. Page-number text is drawn directly onto the existing PDF pages, preserving original vector and text quality where supported.
Can I add numbers to landscape pages?
Yes. Placement is calculated for each page independently, including mixed page sizes and orientations.
Can I number a password-protected PDF?
If the backend has qpdf available, enter the correct password. Otherwise, unlock the PDF first with Unlock PDF.
Are uploaded files deleted?
Yes. Temporary files are deleted after download, cancellation, failure, timeout, or automatic expiry.
What is the maximum PDF size?
PDF files can be up to 100 MB and 500 pages.
Will links and bookmarks remain in the PDF?
The original PDF is modified without rebuilding its pages, so links, annotations, bookmarks, metadata, selectable text, and images are preserved where pdf-lib supports the document structure.
